In my workshop I am immersed in a universe of vintage objects. I do not mean only the typographic families that are filling the space (about 150 in lead and some 50 in wood), but also my collection of old Polariod cameras from the 1960s and 1970s, most of the artifacts that I am using to print or manipulate the paper, the old manual Boston from the 1930s and the newly acquired Adler Tippa from the 1950s, a German typing machine well known at the time for its lightweight design making it “ultra-portable”.

Last weekend we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Shabuti Duijndam (together with Eva Westra, the soul of La Solane, the small paradise that we go whenever we can to have a break from the world) so I decided to check on his sense of humor by designing a unique label for a wine labeled specially for the occasion, thus turning 50 one does not reach the level of antiquity …. but can be considered  a little bit vintage (!!!).

I started by cutting an old ad from a 1960’s magazine, to which I added a small dedication text using for first time my old Alder typing machine, and afterwards I joined a couple of texts with the old Boston (using “Opal” font from the National Typographic Founders) and a 50 in wooden letters.  I finished by signing with an old fountain pen that I do not know in what moment arrived in my workshop. Nevertheless, a bunch of vintage elements that were received with the ironic smile of who has just caught the joke!

A perfect weekend in the French Pyrenees, surrounded by friends and with the magical sensation of waking up in a little house built on the top of a tree!
